If you have high blood pressure the chances are you’ll be using a blood pressure monitor at home. There are various ways to use it and different times of the day to take your readings.

Blood Pressure Monitors for Home Use

For your convenience, take a look at some of the more popular monitors at Amazon.

As you can see there’s quite a few to choose from, you can definitely find one to fit your needs.

How to Use Your Blood Pressure Monitor

You have to choose the type of monitor you want to buy. There are two types.

The Aneroid Monitor - the gauge is read by looking at a pointer on a dial. The cuff is placed around your upper arm and inflated by hand. This is done by squeezing a rubber bulb.

Digital – these monitors have either manual or automatic cuffs. The blood pressure reading flashes on a small screen.

The aneroid monitor is slightly cheaper than the digital, past that it’s really a matter of preference. The aneroid monitor requires more hands on where as the digital is more automated. Look around and try each on for size, consider if it’s just for home use or you will take it when you travel.

There are a few things you need to do before you take your blood pressure.

Don’t eat or use caffeine, alcohol, or tobacco products 30 minutes before measuring your blood pressure.

Go to the bathroom and empty your bladder before measuring your blood pressure.

Rest for 3 to 5 minutes before measuring your blood pressure. Do not talk.

Sit in a comfortable position with your legs and ankles uncrossed and your back supported.

Place your left arm, raised to the level of your heart, on a table or a desk and sit still.

Wrap the cuff smoothly and snugly around the upper part of your bare arm. The cuff should fit snugly, but there should also be enough room for you to slip one fingertip under the cuff.

Check to see that the bottom edge of the cuff is 1 inch above the crease of your elbow.

It will be repetitive to state what will be in the instructions, but generally the aneroid monitor will require you to do more manual work (as you see what the nurse does at your Doctors) versus the digital. If the digital monitor is semiautomatic you’ll have to inflate the cuff and then the monitor will automatically release and take readings on the way down.

How to Check the Accuracy of Your Blood Pressure Monitor

You should check the accuracy of your monitor at least once a year.

The easiest way is to take it to your Doctors office. This is the perfect time to let them teach you how to use it. Also, they can compare your monitor against there’s. If all is well take your monitor back once a year for a check-up, the Doctors device is calibrated more often and is a good way to check the accuracy of your blood pressure monitor.

Occasionally check the plastic tubes and cuffs for cracks or leaks. Any small air leaking from your monitor will cause inaccurate readings. Heat is also an enemy of these devices, this is due to the plastic and rubber used to make them. Thinking about these factors, you may want to include the type of warranty each manufacturer gives you when choosing one to purchase.

What do the Readings Mean?

The normal blood pressure reading is 120/80, going below this puts you into a low blood pressure condition and moving upwards starts you in the direction of prehypertension symptoms.

If your readings on the upside are averaging 140-159/90-99 you need to see your doctor. Your entering a stage 1 high blood pressure category, this needs attention.

Just for your information, here’s what all these numbers mean when your using the monitor.

Systolic pressure is the highest pressure in an artery when your heart is pumping blood to your body.

Diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure in an artery when your heart is at rest.

Blood pressure measurement is made up of both the systolic and the diastolic pressure. It is normally written like this: 120/80, with the systolic (top) number first.

If you are outside the normal range, there is help, there are natural ways to lower your blood pressure. You might need high blood pressure drugs for immediate care, but keep in mind using monitors and learning some natural remedies will be your best long term cure.

Since we are looking at different remedies for your blood pressure problems, we must include meditation techniques.

Remedies don’t always have to be in the form of a drug or supplements, how your think affects your health.

With stress comes tightness and tension, this causes blood pressure to go up and can constrict your arteries. Using meditation to relax can take a big load off your system. If you’re not use to this method, take time to learn the different techniques.

There have been more than 600 studies over the past 30 years using meditation for high blood pressure problems and the average reduction in blood pressure was about 8 points.

How Does Meditation Help?

Transcendental meditation (TM) is the only form that’s proven effective in reducing the risks of heart conditions.

Researchers believe that the deep rest achieved through TM sparks biochemical changes that help the body and mind reach a more balanced state, in turn triggering the body’s own self-repair mechanism.

Most TM practitioners suggest 2 sessions a day for 20 minuets is the most effective schedule.

This form of meditation is not only good for high blood pressure, but improves awareness and alertness. This is accomplished by removing harmful negative thoughts and replacing them with positive relaxing words or phrases.

Meditation Techniques

The most common tool used in meditation are CD’s. Relaxation and subliminal CD’s.

The first step is to find a quiet, relaxing place to lie down so you can focus on the message. Some CD’s deliver soothing sounds with an occasional verbal suggestion added. Some are recorded tones that have a positive affect on brain and thought patterns.

If you want to practice a more standard meditation techniques, then you must look at transcendental meditation, it is a seven step program.

It is suggested that a certified TM teacher be used for this practice. This technique is described as being effortless and natural and involving neither contemplation or concentration. It relies only on the natural tendency of the mind to move in the direction of greater satisfaction.

This meditation technique is what is called an OPEN or RECEPTIVE method. It can be described as giving up control and remaining open in a inner way.

For people on the go you can practice a hybrid form of TM which can be done anywhere – at work, at home, out in public, you just need a quiet place to sit down.

The first step is to relax, close your eyes and breathe deeply – inhale and exhale. As you feel your stress melt away focus on a deeper calm and relaxing state of mind. Do this for about 5 to 10 minutes and you will find that your stress level will be been greatly lowered.

Periodically check your blood pressure and you should start to see your blood pressure going down over time.

The theory behind using these meditation techniques to control high blood pressure is simple, BE AT PEACE.

Using Yoga To Reduce Your Blood Pressure

A close cousin to meditation is yoga.

Yoga is a very low impact exercise routine that is used for relaxation. The key to both yoga and meditation is balancing mind and body for a peaceful existence. You can read more about this at, controlling high blood pressure using yoga.

It’s suggested you do these meditation techniques early in the morning and later in the evening.

Folks with high blood pressure find these techniques effective because you are doing two things. First, you’re eliminating stress and second you are allowing your body to release it’s natural healing powers.

The combination of these two things is very effective in lowering blood pressure and contributes to better overall health.

So, now you have a couple of options to add to your blood pressure remedy kit.

If you want to lower your blood pressure naturally try yoga.

When looking for high blood pressure remedies you have to look at all options that are available. Stress reduction is one of them and yoga is a method that has been used for thousands of years.

The practice of yoga is ancient, but it can have an incredible effect for those living in the 21st century as a high blood pressure treatment. However, many people are uncertain of how (or even whether) to attempt this exercise.

We will explore the common myths and questions surrounding yoga so you can feel comfortable pursuing this technique if you suffer from high blood pressure.

Questions Concerning Yoga and High Blood Pressure

“Isn’t yoga just for young, flexible people?”

Answer: Absolutely not! Yoga can be performed by persons of all ages and abilities. Even if you are wheelchair bound, you can still practice some of the yoga positions from the waist up. And because yoga has a mental component, you can even do some meditating techniques in bed to lower your blood pressure symptoms. All you really need is an open mind and the willingness to try an alternative or complimentary high blood pressure treatment.

“I like extreme exercises. Isn’t yoga kind of dull?”

Answer: Many people assume that yoga is just sitting on the floor cross-legged and meditating. However, there are differing forms of yoga and some require intense physicality. Therefore, if you’re looking to use yoga to lower blood pressure naturally, then you can usually find a type of yoga practice to fit your general physical fitness level.

“I’ve heard that yoga is a religion. I’m happy with my current religion, so maybe yoga isn’t for me.”

Answer: Though yoga can be performed as a way to attain a religious state, when practiced as an exercise, it has no religious connections. Whether you are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, agnostic, or even atheist, you can use yoga as a high blood pressure treatment. Because it “centers” your body and spirit, it provides you with the means to naturally start to reduce your high blood pressure symptoms.

“My doctor didn’t recommend yoga, so I’m hesitant to try it.”

Answer: By all means, ask your physician about yoga as a possibility if he or she didn’t mention it when you were first diagnosed with high blood pressure. Though most doctors will agree that it’s an excellent way to lower blood pressure, they might not immediately assume it’s something in which you are interested. So the next time you have an appointment, feel free to bring it up.

“I don’t belong to a health club, and I don’t feel like I want to join. So I guess I’ll never do yoga…”

Answer: Don’t allow your lack of gym membership to stop you from getting the advantages of yoga! There are plenty of books, DVDs, and articles describing the practice consequently, you can lower your blood pressure s in the comfort of your living room!

Best of all, yoga can be performed anywhere, so if you go on vacation you can always do it in your hotel room or even on the beach.

If you don’t have a facility nearby that has yoga sessions or you feel more comfortable doing it at home, you can find programs online.

You don’t have to take hours to start a Yoga program, start slow, the main thing is reduce stress and you’ll lower your blood pressure naturally.

If you include yoga with other techniques you learn for your blood pressure, then you are on the right path to better health.

Take a look at Yoga for Beginners, lower your blood pressure and live happier in good health.

Foods are one source for the vitamins your body needs, taking supplements is another way of ingesting vitamins. Getting the right vitamins for your body is imperative for people with high blood pressure problems, but we need to first talk about absorption.

Absorption and digestion is very important and the bottom line is IF YOU CAN”T DIGEST IT PROPERLY- YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE THE MAXIMUM BENEFITS it’s that simple.

Studies show that more than 30 percent of what we ingest never gets into our system. It passes right through us and ends up in the toilet, which is where the money you paid for it goes too.

We mention this because many times folks feel that natural remedies don’t work, the reason is you are not digesting and absorbing properly. Another factor is it takes vitamins and supplements longer to work compared to drugs.

Vitamins That Effect High Blood Pressure

Lets take a look at what effect vitamins and minerals have on high blood pressure.

Vitamin A – is a fat-soluble vitamin that, like vitamin E, works primarily in the lipid, or fat, tissues of your body. Vitamin A prevents LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) building up of plague in your arteries.

Vitamin C – protects your arteries and decreases the risk of heart disease and hypertension. It prevents the generation of free radicals which damage artery walls. It helps repair damage to the arteries, preventing the deposit of plaque at the site of injury. It also helps elevate levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).

Vitamin E – is the most active antioxidant in the fatty cells of your body. It reduces the risk of heart disease and hypertension by protecting your arteries from the effects of oxidized LDL cholesterol.

Potassium – even though it’s not a vitamin I include it because it’s easy to get and has an affect on high blood pressure. Bananas, potatoes and milk are good sources for getting potassium.

Magnesium – again, is not a vitamin but does benefit you and is a supplement easily found. People require between 300 and 400 milligrams of magnesium each day. Salmon, leafy green vegetables, whole grains and nuts are good sources of magnesium.

Since many people take supplements we want to look at quality, the quality of a supplement is just as important as its benefits for high blood pressure.

How to Judge a Quality Supplement

If you are under a Doctors care you should talk with him/her first before making any dietary changes, especially if you are on medications.

This also includes adding vitamins or supplements to your diet. There may be factors in your medical history, especially with high blood pressure, that could affect your health. Although vitamins have never killed anyone, you’ll still want to run it past your Doctor.

Your choice of vitamins is as large as the taxes taken from your paycheck. It’s a big business where you will find a lot of substandard products.

Two factors that affect the quality of supplements – processing techniques and fillers.

A cheap vitamin like vitamin C may claim they have 500 mg in it, but how much vitamin C really gets into your system after you break it down?

As far as processing it’s a lot faster to use heat compared to the slower and more efficient cold process. Heat destroys or as they say “Cooks Out” a percentage of a supplements potency, this reduces its benefits. The question remains, how do you know what to buy? The answer is buy what is proven to be good.

There are certain companies that are certified and adhere to a good practice seal, this is called GMP certified.

The simplest way to go about this is buying from a reputable company. Here are a few companies we consider to be high grade products:

Roex

Garden of Life

Centrum Silver Brand

Vita-Logic

Natures Way

Hypercet

If you want to dig a little further into this subject, then check with consumer labs.

Having confirmation from a lab that breaks down the ingredients of a supplement is another way to check the quality of vitamins. It’s unfortunate, but there are a lot of contaminated ingredients found in vitamins which do not benefit anyone.

One containment I came across was lead. This is generally not a concern with quality vitamins because they have strict quality control measures.

Now that you have another remedy to deal with high blood pressure naturally, just make sure to buy quality products and be patient using them.

If you cannot find one of the quality manufacturers locally you can definitely find them online.

Taking care of your high blood pressure condition correctly requires using quality supplements.

Herbal teas have been used for thousands of years to cleanse your body. Now it’s time to discover which teas help lower blood pressure.

Many teas are cleansers which help rid your body of toxins. These toxins contribute to arterial deterioration which can cause high blood pressure problems.

Many of these teas have a trace of vitamin C in them which is an antioxidant and enhances the benefits you derive from these teas.

If you are on medication and under a Doctors care, please check with your Doctor before changing your diet. This is only precautionary, but sometimes the caffeine or other ingredients could conflict with your medication.

Understanding Herbal Teas And How They Lower Blood Pressure

Herbal teas are medicinal and work at a slower pace compared to prescription drugs.

Most prescription drugs are aimed at alleviating symptoms or acute conditions. Few, if any, address the underlying core issues and many prolong the chronic condition in the body.

It can take anywhere from weeks to months for herbal remedies to work. Rebuilding your bodies systems is quite different from drugs that only treat the symptoms. This misunderstanding has caused many people to abandon the idea that these natural ingredients just don’t work.

Quality is essential when your objective is medicinal. Also, even though we talk mostly about teas, you can use a variety of herbs to make a tea compound.

Herbs come from all parts of the world, how they’re grown, how they are processed and how they are packaged all contributes to quality. Chinese medicine has a solid history to support the claims that herbal teas work.

Use Caution – Teas that lower blood pressure can actually hurt you if you’re trying to raise your blood pressure. Having a Doctor that knows both medicine and natural practices is a big benefit.

Matching up the right herbs with your individual condition requires care, just make sure your are taking herbs that will be of benefit to you.

The blended herbal teas found in your local health food store are much milder than individual herbs themselves. If you feel you need the stronger herb mixture of teas, then consult with a certified herbalist.

Having said that, lets take a look at some herbs that lower blood pressure:

Garlic (Allium sativum)

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)

Kelp (Fucus visiculosis)

Skullcap (Scutellaria)

Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycanthus)

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)

Burdock (Arctum lappa)

Valerian (Valeriana)

Are some of these names familiar to you?

Some of these herbs can be found in your local store. You can make your own herbal teas just by adding any of these herbs to hot water, that’s all tea is. With some of these blends you can add peppermint or some other natural ingredient for flavor.

Tip – Pound a garlic clove and leave it out for 10 minuets, this will increase its potency.

Distributors Of Quality Teas

Finding a good off the shelf herbal tea is kind of difficult.

Stores sell lower quality teas because most customers don’t know the difference and price matters to a customer. The reason these lower priced teas are lower is because the manufacturer uses the less potent part of the herb and adds fillers to the blend. You might have to use 10 tea bags to get the same benefit as you would from a good quality herb.

Here are a few places we know that delivers quality teas:

Adagio Teas

Traditional Medicines (found in stores) Teas

Mountain Rose Herbs (online)

Teavana (online – Au Lat Verde Green Tea)

Mighty Leaf Teas

and The Herbal Tea Search

In general Green, Black and Oolong are good herbal teas for lowering your blood pressure. The key to extracting the maximum benefits from these teas is the steeping process. Then you have to consider the type of pot you use for brewing.

Tetsubin teapots are well suited for brewing green teas like Dragonwell and Kyoto Rice. Often fired with enamel interiors, these long lasting teapots do not impart any flavor, retain heat well and heat evenly. With a metal infuser, the cast-iron teapots are also easy to use and make monitoring the steeping time simple.

Stoneware and ceramic teapots are ideal teapots for everyday use. For example, enjoy your morning cup of tea with whole loose leaf prepared in a teapot using a removable stainless steel infuser or, if no infusion basket is included, a T-Sac paper filter bag. Stoneware and ceramic teapots come in a variety of colors and designs and appeal to many tea drinkers. They can be used to prepare any style of tea including black, oolong, green, white or herbal infusions.

Glass is ideal for retaining heat and brewing flavored teas as the teapot does not retain the tea’s flavor. Germany produces many high quality glass teapots. Glass teapots are also ideal for brewing flowering teas, as you can watch as the tea leaves unfurl before your eyes revealing hidden treasures within and depending upon the tea, its characteristic liquor color.

Making Your Own Green Tea

Green tea is one of the more popular teas to drink for both pleasure and health. It has many benefits including managing blood pressure.

As mentioned, for medicinal purposes, quality means everything. When a tea is manufactured in volume the quality and purity suffer, this is reason enough you should consider making your own green tea. You not only control the quality of the tea, but you save money too!

Weight loss, lowering blood pressure – green tea is an all around fantastic drink you should include in your diet. Find out how you can make green tea yourself – save money and get the most benefits from it. Visit Green-4-Tea right now!

Remember

Herbs have a more profound effect compared to supplements, and therefore the guidance of your Doctor or holistic professional is advised.

Having a cup of tea doesn’t require a Doctors approval, what we are talking about is using herbal teas in a medicinal sense.

Tea is another of natures natural remedies that can be used for managing blood pressure issues.

You will find several sources online where you can purchase quality herbal teas. The good news is it’s not that expensive and it can have a positive effect on your high blood pressure condition.

If you didn’t know it, there’s a High Blood Pressure Diet that’s just right for you.

A diet should be tailored to the specific needs of the patient, a diet that will help regulate and lower your blood pressure risks. Yes, with elevated blood pressure you have risks and these can be fatal if you ignore the signs.

There is no reason NOT to check your blood pressure these days. Visiting your Doctor is one way to get your blood pressure checked and even your local pharmacy sometimes has a portable unit that will do a quick check.

You also have the option to purchase a portable home device, in some cases your insurance company will pay for it.

When you find the right high blood pressure diet you’ll want to check your stats out more often. This will be a way for you to tell if teh diet is working or not.

Once you get your blood pressure under control stick with the diet. As we age the need for better foods to lower blood pressure increases. If we go back to old habits surely our blood pressure will rise again.

Lets take a look at some High Blood Pressure Diets

It’s almost impossible to eat 100% natural. Will try to choose as many natural foods to lower blood pressure, ones that are readily available at your local stores. Lets start…

Whole Grain – A box of natural oats will last months and cost maybe $7.00. Sweeten with honey. The main benefit is for cholesterol, but this affects your blood pressure and is a great source of natural energy.

Fruits and Vegetables – Easily converted sugar for energy, good source of vitamins and minerals, some fiber for cleaning your colon and is easy on your digestive system.

Beef Alternative – Ostrich or Buffalo. As high blood pressure increases in our society the reemergence of Ostrich and Buffalo meats could make a comeback. The primary market demand is much lower fat and 1/3 the calories of chicken. It’s not common, but I hear rumblings that maybe there’s a demand for these meats on the horizon.

Cooking Spices – Adding these spices such as fennel, oregano, black pepper, basil and tarragon to your cooking routine is beneficial in high blood pressure. Use them in your cooking.

Onion – Are useful in hypertension. What is best is the onion essential oil. Two to three tablespoons of onion essential oil a day was found to lower the systolic levels by an average of 25 points and the diastolic levels by 15 points in hypertension subjects. This should not be surprising because onion is a cousin of garlic.

Tomatoes – Are high in gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), a compound that can help bring down blood pressure.

Broccoli – This vegetable contains several active ingredients that reduce blood pressure.

The maximum benefit, when building a high blood pressure diet, is eating vegetables raw. This is not always possible so the next best thing is steamed.

It’s also claimed that the juice from boiling vegetables is more nutritious that the veggies themselves.

If you combine some of the remedies found on this site with the proper diet, then you can start to put together a plan that will lower your blood pressure.

You can’t go wrong with what nature has provided for you naturally, but remember if you are on medication check with your Doctor before you make it a regular routine.

If your taking medications there may be conflicts with some herbs or spices.

The drug companies make it convenient, but with the side effects it’s also dangerous. I don’t know anyone who has died from supplements, vegetables or fruits.

You’ll find much more detail about natural ways to lower your blood pressure and diet information on this site. For better long term health look for natural remedies and diets, that’s the best plan.

In this section we are looking for Natural Remedies for your High Blood Pressure problems.

There are a number of natural ways to lower blood pressure, by learning a few of these techniques you are on your way to helping yourself to better health.

Why is High Blood Pressure Known as the SILENT KILLER?

HBP is called the Silent Killer.

The reason high blood pressure is called the silent killer is because people can have HBP for years without knowing or experiencing symptoms. Not knowing they have HBP when they finally experience symptoms, the damage can be life threatening.

What is Stage 1 – Stage 2

The normal blood pressure for most of us is 120/80.

When you hear the words pre-hypertension you have to think in two stages. When your blood pressure readings rise above the 120/80 range you are consider pre-hypertension stage 1. If your blood pressure rises above the 160/100, then you are considered stage 2.

These are warning stages and should be cared for so that you do not go into full blown high blood pressure status.

Now, the question that has to be answered is, WHAT TO DO NEXT?

The first thing you want to do is consult with your Doctor. Even though we are focusing on natural remedies you still want the advice of a medical professional. It will be your responsibility to gather all the information from various sources so you can determine what course of action is best for you.

Reviewing Natural Remedies For High Blood Pressure

For starters you can review the section on high blood pressure remedies.

Now, lets look at some of the more common items that are easily found in your local store or health center:

Garlic – This has natural properties that has a direct affect on high blood pressure. The pre-caution here is combining it with other blood thinners. Consult your Doctor if your taking a blood thinner such as Coumadin.

Folic Acid – Folate is a B vitamin, it aids in the creation of red cells and helps control inflammation. Chronic inflammation in the arterial system can play havoc with your blood pressure.

Aerobic Exercise – I know this is not considered a remedy, but it should. Getting toxins out of your body relieves the various systems of stress including high blood pressure. Jogging in place while watching TV, going up and down stairs while listening to the radio all increase cardio and get your blood moving.

Teas – Sometimes teas are overlooked, but a good quality licorice or ginseng tea can have an affect on your blood pressure.

Here’s a list of other natural ingredients that can be used for high blood pressure:

Thiamin

Riboflavin

Niacin

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B12

Biotin

Pantohenic Acid

Calcium

Magnesium

Potassium

Ginseng Root

Gingko Biloba

Hawthorne berry

Cayenne pepper

Pomegranate fruit

Coenzyme Q10

Lypcopene

Or, you can look at products that blend several of these ingredients in a easy to take natural product such as Hypercet.

Comments About Natural Remedies

There is one key thing to remember when using natural remedies – BE PATIENT.

Vitamins, supplements, herbs, they work at a much different pace compared to medicine. Medicine definitely has it’s place when it comes to emergencies and treatments, but we look to natural means for a more long term benefit.

The reality of the drug industry these days is well stated in their motto “The money is in the treatment, not the cure”.

What this tells us is if we are looking for a CURE, then we MUST look in other places and natural remedies is one of them.

There is plenty of evidence now a days about the damage done to our body when taking medicine long term. Yes, in some cases there is no choice and for those people the drug industry is a Godsend. But, there are many people who are not in that group and looking at the alternatives is a much better long term choice.

The first step in managing high blood pressure is knowing you have it. Once you know this you can start researching the natural remedies for high blood pressure.

Maybe a better plan is to analyze your health now, make the necessary changes before HBP becomes a problem. Not a bad idea…

There are many Natural Ways to Lower Blood Pressure and this is what we will focus on in this article.

We know that drugs systemically affect other parts of the body. It is stated in the commercials we see on TV, so this is one reason we must look at the alternative and look at remedies that can help.

The use of natural products reduces the risk of drug interaction. Yes, you can also overdue it with natural methods, but constipation generally the worse thing that will happen.

Natural Ways to Lower Your Blood Pressure

Nature provides numerous natural ingredients that benefit us, lets look at some that specifically aide in the area of high blood pressure:

Bad Habits – Lets knock these out right away. Smoking, refined foods, sodas, bad fats, etc.. You get the picture, I don’t have to harp on this to much do I?

Vitamin C – The less vitamin C in the blood, the higher the blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

Boost Bioflavonoids – Available in fruits, vegetables and supplements, bioflavonoids enhance vitamin C’s effect.

Vitamin E – Evidence suggests that vitamin E also magnifies vitamin C’s blood pressure-lowering effect.

Carrot Juice – Studies show it cleans arteries.

Cayenne – The capsicum in cayenne slows arteriosclerosis, which can cause hypertension.

Parsley – It’s a natural diuretic, which cuts blood pressure.

Ginger – Ginger offers hypertensive benefits to some.

Melatonin – This hormone decreases nighttime blood pressure, concluded a study published in the January 2004 issue of Hypertension.

Ginkgo Biloba – Relaxes arterial walls, easing pressure.

One major area that you have control over is food. You can use Foods to Lower Blood Pressure. This falls right in line with finding high blood pressure remedies for the long term.

What we are talking about is including foods that benefit us and eliminating foods in our diet that aggravate our blood pressure condition.

The hardest thing in life is to CHANGE OLD HABITS and eating habits is one of the hardest things to change.

How to Change Habits

For most people changing habits is tough.

You actually have to start with your mindset change. You must determine the benefits a change will provide for you and then determine the HOW TO part.

There is one simple process you can use which is keeping it simple. What we mean is take one thing at a time, lets say you like sweets, but they aggravate your condition. Find a replacement food for just one type of sweet you now eat and work with that.

It may take months for you to make the change, but once finished your old habit will be replaced with the new one.

This is not the QUICK FIX everyone wants, but it is a more permanent change process. Focus on one food at a time until you made it a permanent change.

Foods to Lower Blood Pressure

Bananas: High in potassium and fiber, the banana is convenient, tasty, inexpensive, and with a little imagination can make a sinfully delicious dessert.

Tomatoes: Another source of potassium and also of calcium. The tomato has a powerful antioxidant called lycopene that can also help prevent heart disease. Lycopene prevent LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and sticking to the blood vessels. Fresh is best. If you get your tomato through juice, make sure it’s pure and does not contain additives and salt. If you’re into pasta, try making your own sauce. It can be fun and the house will smell wonderful as you are making it.

Blueberries and Blackberries: Both are packed with powerful antioxidants and are another source of dietary fiber.

Garlic: Garlic is one of those miracle foods that has been used medicinally for over a thousand years. It has the capacity to thin the blood thereby making it easier for the heart to pump. It has also been suggested that garlic is a defense against certain digestive cancers including colon cancer.

Cold Water Fish: Salmon, sardines, halibut, tuna and mackerel are great sources of Omega-3. Try to replace a red meat meal two or three time per week with one of these fish.

Dark Chocolate and Cocoa: Yes there is some fat and sugar in there but there is also some very powerful antioxidants. More importantly, if you are going to change your diet you still need to have some kind of reward food for sticking to it. Combine that dark chocolate with baked bananas and you have a very tasty dessert.

Water: Okay you may not think of water as a food but it is essential not only to your blood pressure but to your entire body. Dehydration is becoming a bigger health issue than it was before. As a rule, you should drink half your body weight in ounces daily. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 ounces of water or about 4 standard bottles a day.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil: High in oleic acid and polyphenols, an antioxidant.

Other Tips

Try not to microwave to many foods.

When you are working on a diet change and are switching to natural foods, you want to preserve as much nutrition in the food as possible, microwaving reduces nutrients from food.

Eating Out – When going to restaurants request less salt and sauces that can aggravate your blood pressure. This way you can enjoy dining out and still stay on the path to better health.

Stress – Staying away from situations that creates stress for you is another way to keep your blood pressure down. Stress can drive your blood pressure through the roof, find ways to reduce stress.

Don’t try to change everything at once, in most cases you will fail. Make the easiest changes first and work your way up the ladder, start with your diet – take another look at the foods listed above to lower blood pressure – keep a positive outlook.
